The Glasgow to Aberfoyle Line was a line built in stages leaving the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway close to Lenzie. The main motivation for building it was Tourism with road tours to the Trossachs forming a significant part of it. The Strathendrick and Aberfoyle line was operated by North British Railway and subsequently in 1923 by the London and North Eastern Railway. Opened for passenger and freight in 1882. It eventually failed to compete with road transport and was closed by British Railways in 1951 and the line completely closed in 1959. A note: This is a Sustrans 7 route. Total distance 5.6 miles. We have tried to ascertain that equestrian traffic can access this line, having got a rather non- informative email from Sustrans. In the main part it does look accessible and Scotland does have an open access policy.
