OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Deerness Valley Railway Path
Another Durham Railway path. This is a fantastic area to ride with so much
opportunity to Long Ride on so many disused railways! This one is nearly 9 miles long
travelling from Crook to join the Lanchester Valley Railway Path and the Brandon -
Bishop Auckland Railway Path.
The railway followed the Deerness River Valley carrying coal from Ushaw Moor,
Waterhouses, Hamsteels, Esh, Cornsay, New Brancepeth and East Hedley Hope. It
was opened in 1858 for goods services and passenger traffic came in 1877 with the
opening of the fist station at Waterhouses.
The line closed to passenger services in 1951, and then goods services ceased in 1964.
