OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
The Granite Way
The old railway line from Okehampton to
Tavistock.
This section is from Okehampton to Lydford although it
looks possible that other sections could be utilised and we
will update as we have the information. There is a break in
the southerly section where there is an alternative route on
the West Devon Way to re-join the open section of the old
railway.
Grid ref: SX 590 944 at Okehampton
Grid ref: SX 516 852 near Lydford 11 miles
It is now part of the national cycleway route 27 and this
section at Okehampton is alongside the line so check train
times if you intend to ride it. Originally built by the London
South- Western Railway (LSWR) and others, the line to
Lydford was completed in 1874. There were a number of
different companies building lines in the area that leased
operations to the LSWR and the line the Granite Way uses
was closed down to railway traffic in 1963.
