OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Dove Valley Way
The Dove Valley trail runs on a former railway line from Silkstone Common towards Wombwell and beyond passing through Dodworth and Worsborough and forms part of the National Trans Pennine Trail. The way is about 9.6 Miles long and has the superb option of going further at each end onto bridleways, travelling onto the Dearne Valley (another 32.7 miles) at the east end. At the Silkstone end you can continue southerly on the bridleway to Far Coates ( part of the Trans Pennine Trail) or in a northerly direction towards Silkstone. A possibility to connect to the Upper Don Trail another bridleway the Trans Pennine Trail uses.Initially the railway was the South Yorkshire coal Railway and was opened in 1847 to move coal from where it was mined to its markets. The north Midland railway opposed the project in Parliament. Since the company built some of its own lines and merged with other businesses (common at the time) it has been difficult to find many details. Further research is necessary.
