This was the Craig Coch to Rhayader Railway, built at the end of the nineteenth
century, to convey men and materials for the construction of the Elan Valley Reservoirs
in Mid-Wales. The railway was efficient and served its purpose, the main line closing in
1916. The Mid-Wales line closed on 31
st
December 1962. Walkers, Cyclists and
Horse Riders now use the railway line as the Elan Valley Trail. There must be a
plentiful supply of wild life and beautiful, stunning scenery as well (as all that lovely
fresh air) to be seen that is not conveyed in the photographs included in this section. If
you happen to visit this trail and take photos we would love to add them to the gallery.
The water collected still serves the city of Birmingham. It's an interesting read about the
history of construction, and lives of the men that built the reservoirs and dams. A new
model village was built mostly of timber to house the people that worked there as well
as their families. We have included a link on this page for more information. The route
is about 9 miles long linear. There are bridleways which give opportunities to explore
further over open moorland and possibly continue back to Rhayader in a loop. Please
take care if you choose to, by what ever means you do it.
