OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Now a Country Park, this railway line was formerly the Bishop’s Stortford to Braintree line. It was closed to passenger traffic due to falling patronage following the growing popularity of car and bus transport in March of 1952. It is just over 16 miles end to end and the Way passes from Braintree, through Rayne, Little Dunmow, a road route through Great Dunmow to re-join the railway westward as far as Start Hill near the M11. Open to all users. You ride at your own risk if riding through Great Dunmow. (See link below) From the Ordnance Survey mapping it is possible to continue your journey on bridleways either the other side of the M11 to Stanstead Mounfitchet which looks from our research to be clearly open, or to follow another bridleway on the southerly side of the Motorway crossing. There is a bridge over a railway, then underpasses of the Motorway and another railway line taking you to Aubrey Buxton Nature reserve. The qualities of the bridleways are not known. Please be aware of significant air traffic noise. The Flitch Way can be accessed from the Great Notley Country car park and riding the bridleways northwards connecting directly onto the Way at Rayne. If you are going to park there, try and avoid the busy periods.
