OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Hadleigh Railway Walk
The Hadleigh branch line connected to the Great Eastern main line at Bentley. It
opened in 1847. The decline in passenger numbers using the branch can be seen
in the patronage figures, which were 14,447 in 1923 compared to 5,086 just five
years later. The line closed to passengers in 1932 and closed completely in 1965.
Now Hadleigh Railway Walk it is 2.23 miles long and a lovely leafy linear line
with canopy most of the way.
The Hadleigh Station Building still stands and is a private residence. It can be
found by turning off to the right at the end of the Railway line and then the next
right turn off the minor road. The railway canopy is still there! A possible parking
spot.
At the other end Raydon Station building is grade 2 listed and the Station yard is
used as a depot by CPL Distribution.
