OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK

Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Path

A three mile long multi-user route (Sustrans 71) was created by the Lake District National Park Authority between Threlkeld and Keswick though the Greta Gorge. Three bridges on the footpath were damaged or destroyed in the winter 2015 floods and at the time of writing is still (2019) in the process of being repaired. The Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway was 31½ miles long with eight intermediate stations and opened in 1864. The section from Keswick to Cockermouth was closed in 1966 leaving Keswick at the end of a single line branch from Penrith which survived until 6th March, 1972. Work on the line was completed in December 2020 (see link below). This looks to be a really nice line to ride now that it is open again. We ended the route near The Riddings as we regarded crossing the A66 and continuing over Threlkeld Bridge (another 0.9 miles) more of a dead end to the route. In the video extension is referred to, though, we cannot verify it.The railway line continues on to Troutbeck but is not developed as a multi-user path as far as we can ascertain at time of editing.
