OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Lanchester Valley Railway Path
County Durham
(Also known as Derwent
walk)
The railway was run by the North Eastern Railway between Durham and
Consett to carry iron ore to Consett steelworks and coal from Langley Park. It
was opened in 1862 and is 12 miles along the River Browney. Closure came in
1965. The equestrian section to the Sustrans path from Swalwell to Consett is
9.91 miles.
It is now a multi user path and it can be accessed from bridleways and minor
roads along its length. The path goes through Consett as a Sustrans no 14
cycleway and joins the Consett and Sunderland Railway Path. Having studied it
on Google Earth, it may be possible to continue on the Sustrans path to join the
Consett and Sunderland Railway Path and continue on the journey. The rider
should be confident that his/her horse is good in traffic as it does cross what
looks like busy roads.
