OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Lon Eifion
This line was formerly part of the Caernarfon to Afon Wen line. It was standard gauge,
originally run by Caernarfon Railway and later by LNWR and then LMS. The line had two
branches, one from Caernarfon to Llanberis, which was built by the Caernarfon and
Llanberis Railway and the other from Penygroes to Nantlle, which formed part of the
narrow gauge Nantlle Railway, that ran between Penygroes and Caernarvon later
incorporated into the Caernarfonshire Railway.
There was a regular passenger service on the Llanberis line until 1930, but they did run
summer excursions in 1932 – 1939 and again from 1946 until 1962. The Nantlle line closed in
1932 and the Beeching axe came down on the remaining lines in 1964 by British Rail.
Since 1997 the Caernarfon to Dinas section has re-opened as part of the Welsh Highland
Railway which now goes all the way to Porthmadog. There is a path which runs alongside
the railway, that is part of Sustrans 8, accessible to horse riders, cyclists and walkers as far as
Dinas for about 2.5 miles. If equestrians wish to ride this section as well as the section from
Dinas to Bryncir we'd advise you check train times below or with the Heritage railway.
From Dinas to Bryncir the route is about 9.25 miles. Most of the track is tarmac. There is a
bridge to cross with low parapets over the 'A' road at Groeslon that some riders/ horses may
not like. A fairly level ride with far reaching views and plenty of sea air driving in from the
coast.
