OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
The Longdendale Trail
The former Woodhead railway line ran between Manchester and Sheffield via Penistone. Well known for passing through tunnels under the moorland in the northern Peak District. The line opened in 1845. Plans were drawn up in 1936 to electrify the line owning to the difficulty of operating steam hauled trains through the Penistone-Wath section. Gantries were built before the second world war. By 1955 electrification was finally completed. With all the investment carried out on the line it was closed to passenger traffic in 1970. The tracks were lifted in mid- 1980. The Longdendale Trail is the section between Hadfield and the Woodhead Tunnel and is part of the Trans-Pennine Trail. If travelling from Hadfield the trail continues as the Longdendale trail beyond the Woodhead Tunnel. Distance is 6.3 miles passing by the Valehouse, Rhodeswood, Torside and Woodhead reservoirs, plenty of opportunities of wildlife spotting! Grid ref: SK 0251 9618 Hadfield end (Parking the opposite side of the railway line SK 0249 9617) Grid ref: SK 1133 9989 Woodhead tunnel end.(Parking about 200yds from emerging left onto A 628 towards the opposite side of the reservoirs. It's a busy road so take care)
