OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Lune Valley Ramble &
Lancaster Coastal Path
This railway line was part of the Lancaster to Leeds line passing through Wennington, now
the Lune Valley Ramble as far as Caton it is about 5 miles long. If you travel on to Glasson,
or make Glasson Dock your starting point, it is another 5.5 miles. There is the possibility to
travel further at the Glasson end as there are minor roads and bridleways to connect to. At
the Caton end you'd have to turn off at Caton village to explore the possibilities there.
It was known as the 'Little' North Western Railway to differentiate it from the larger London
and North Western Railway. Opened along the Lune Valley from Lancaster Green Ayre to
Wennington in 1849, Morecambe to Lancaster railway stayed as a single track till 1877. The
Wennington to Morecambe was closed under the Beeching cuts in 1966. Goods transport
along the Lune Valley stopped in 1967 except for some spurs from the Heysham line and
Lancaster Castle to the power station. Final demise came in 1976. The railway lines in this
area, some that are still in use, have made it difficult to write a concise description. If you
