OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
The Monsal Trail
Approximate length of trail 9 miles. Between Bakewell and Chee Dale in Derbyshire. Formerly it ran from Amberley to Rowsley north of Matlock and then to Buxton. It became part of the Midland Railway's main Line between London and Manchester. The line was opened as far as Rowsley in 1849 and by then they had run out of money, so it went no further. In 1853, a junction was made to the southern end of the Cromford and High Peak Railway and then in 1857 gained support for an extension to Buxton. There's was a lot of merging going on between the companies as well as commercial co-operation such as sharing leases of lines at the time. If you are interested further read the link below. There are tunnels on this route which have recently been restored and they are all accessible to use on the Trail. It is the first time the public have been able to go through the tunnels since the former Midland Railway Line closed in 1968. Four of the longer tunnels are lit during daylight hours. If you ride them in Winter daylight is shorter so take a torch with you just in case you get caught out.The Pennine Bridleway joins at Chee Dale and there are bridleways that take you into Rowsley.
