OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
The Southwell Trail This was part of the Midlands railway and ran between Southwell and Mansfield. A 2.5 mile long railway was built from Rolleston Junction on the Nottingham and Lincoln line to Southwell in 1847. In April 1871 the line was extended to Mansfield, Southwell station being rebuilt in stone. This extension helped further development of the coalfield east of Mansfield, and increasing coal traffic resulted in the whole line being doubled in the 1920's. The line closed to passengers in 1959.The trail is 6.25 miles long and a designated Bridleway terminating at Bilsthorpe. There is a 1 mile spur ending in a footpath onto the A 614 Old Rufford Road, but there doesn’t appear to have any alternative access off the bridleway. At the Southwell end there is a small Industrial Estate where it may be possible to load/unload. Grid ref: SK 706 543 Southwell Grid ref: SK 649 602 Bilsthorpe (car park at this end of the line)
