OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Pencaitland Railway Path
The railway line was built in 1867 to serve the many mines in the area. It follows the course of the Edinburgh - Gifford branch Railway line, originally built by the Gifford and Garvald Light Railway Company and was later extended to Macmerry, Pencaitland and finally Gifford in 1901. It carried passengers, goods and whisky and coal as well as agricultural goods. The line was closed in 1965. The Railway Walk 6.5 miles long from Crossgatehall in the west at Saltoun Woods. The viaduct over the River Humbie was demolished after it was swept away by floods. Saltoun Station was west of the viaduct which had a single arch. Bridges and viaducts are always nice to see and traverse. A shame it has been lost to history. A tidy horse ride with the opportunity to explore the Saltoun Woods. Don't forget in Scotland it is open access and camping wild is not generally objected to, so long as you take care to leave it as you found it.
