OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Sett Valley Trail
The Sett Valley Trail is a 2.5 miles long bridleway. Even so it does connect to the Pennine
Bridleway which passes through Hayfield. The railway line operated as a branch line
between New Mills and Hayfield carrying goods and passengers from 1868 running along
the lower valley of the River Sett. It closed in 1970. Derbyshire County Council bought the
line from British Rail in 1973. Hayfield's station buildings were demolished and parking
and tourist facilities were built.
It is a beautiful area to ride with a lot of history attached, with solid stone buildings
everywhere. Passing through Hayfield, riding the Pennine Bridleway some years ago, they
had a Corn Dolly Festival! There are plenty of other bridleways in the area that the rider
can explore.
