The Severn Valley branch (as it was known) was operated by the West Midland Railway and opened in 1862. It called at Stourport-on-Severn in Worcestershire, and terminated at Berrington in Shropshire. Originally planned it was a double track, but was built and operated as single track. The line was never financially viable carrying mostly agricultural goods and coal from the collieries. After the first world war passenger traffic dwindled even when adding intermediate halts. It was used as diversionary route round the West Midlands after the second world war. Nationalisation happened in 1948. It came under the notice of Beeching in the 1960s, but it was already marked for closure. Passenger service ceased in September 1963 and freight closure followed November of the same year. Now Sustrans cycle path 45 we start this section of it from Ironbridge, terminating just over 7 miles at Lower Severn Hall. There is potential to extend your ride by taking bridle paths joining the way and possibly a circular ride using the Silkin Way by cutting the Severn Way journey short. Cross the Coalport Bridge. There is a very equestrian accommodating Inn on the Silkin Way near the bridge.
