OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Waskerley Way
County Durham
This route is 9.6 miles long and on the original Railway line of the
Stanhope and Tyne railway opened in 1834. Primarily it was built for
carriage of limestone from the quarries. Coal from some of the collieries
in North Durham was also transported. It did carry passengers from 1845.
Some of it was hauled by rope and winding engines, some by horses and
steam. Closure came 1951. Read the link below it is fascinating
