OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Whitegate Way
The railway line is between Cuddington and Winsford in Cheshire, a distance
of 6.4 miles of permissive bridleway. Originally opened in 1870 it was a
junction off the Chester to Manchester line near Cuddington, Winsford and
Over, having a single stop at Whitegate, hence the name of the Way. It was
used mainly for carriage of freight and salt with a limited passenger use that
ceased in 1931. There were a lot of salt works in the Winsford area. The
station at Whitegate closed in 1963 and the line was completely closed to rail
traffic in 1978.
There is a car park at the Winsford end and the former Station building is
now a café. The bridleway at the Cuddington end (not railway) continues
along the south side of the main line and terminates by Delamere Nursery just
north of the A556.
