OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Chiseldon and
Marlborough Railway Path
This route is just over 7.5 miles long between Cricklade and
Marlborough. Now Sustrans route 45
Originally the railway operated between the Midlands and Southampton.
An Act of Parliament was approved in 1873 for the line.Work began 2
years later. The towns it visited were Swindon, Cirencester, Cricklade and
Marlborough. It was in competition with the GWR line and both lines
never made a profit. It was used to move men and equipment from the
embarkation ports on the south coast between the world wars. It closed to
passenger traffic in 1961 and goods traffic shortly after.
There is a possibility to access the Savernake Forest from the south end
of the Railway path using a minor lane close to Barnfield School (Grid
ref: SU 202 688) or if you are more intrepid a short section of the
A4...Your choice.
