Chiseldon and Marlborough Railway Path
This route is just over 7.5 miles long between Cricklade and Marlborough. Now Sustrans route 45 Originally the railway operated between the Midlands and Southampton. An Act of Parliament was approved in 1873 for the line.Work began 2 years later. The towns it visited were Swindon, Cirencester, Cricklade and Marlborough. It was in competition with the GWR line and both lines never made a profit. It was used to move men and equipment from the embarkation ports on the south coast between the world wars. It closed to passenger traffic in 1961 and goods traffic shortly after. There is a possibility to access the Savernake Forest from the south end of the Railway path using a minor lane close to Barnfield School (Grid ref: SU 202 688) or if you are more intrepid a short section of the A4...Your choice.
