OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK

The Cinder Track

The Cinder Track was formerly the Scarborough to Whitby line transporting goods and passengers up and down the North Yorkshire coast until it closed in 1965. The line opened in July 1885 and was operated by NER until 1889 when they bought it for less than half its capital cost. The line passed into the hands of London and North Eastern Railway in 1923. The line is now used as a bridleway for multiuser use and is 21.5 miles along and very scenic, often called the Scarborough to Whitby Rail Trail, or the Scarborough to Whitby Cinder Track. It starts from Scarborough at Sainsbury’s Car Park as a footpath and does not become a bridleway till Lancaster Way in Scalby at Grid ref: TA 017 909. Depending on time of day we can see no reason why a rider cannot start from the superstore, but it’s a personal decision to unload and tack up in a safe place if not long distance riding from another area. We would advise contacting the manager for permission to do so. At the Whitby end the bridleway ends near Crowdy Hall Farm Grid Ref: NZ 896 094. It looks accessible to carry on to Beavers Carpets and, if not venturing further, a possible parking/loading and turning area. The road in front of Beavers Carpets is a no through road. Grid ref: TA 032 882 Sainsbury’s Grid ref: NZ 893 106 Beavers Carpets, Whitby Do watch the first link below. http://www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com/film/sentimental-journey-whitby-scarborough https://www.scarborough.gov.uk/home/sport-and-leisure/parks-play-areas-and- gardens/cinder-track
