OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK

The Dava Way

The Dava way was originally a Highland railway line linking Grantown-on-Spey and Forres. The 24 mile line was opened in 1863 and closed in 1965. The line was built and initially operated by Inverness & Perth Junction Railway, later becoming part of the Highland Railway in 1865. The Dava Way Association formed in 1997 to create a multi-user path along the railway line. Clearing started in 2003 after buying the former alignment. The Dava Way was opened in 2005. It's a beautiful, scenic and varied route, really unspoilt by tarmac and offering grassy sections to horse ride on and also the possibility, being in Scotland, to wild camp. There is also the Speyside Way which the horse rider can link to if making a long distance route, travelling south. Both are perfectly accessible to horse riders.
