OLD RAILWAYS ON HORSEBACK
Speyside Way Strathspey Railway is a historic railway in Scotland that ran from Boat of Garten to Dufftown. The line was opened in 1863 between Dufftown and Abernethy. The distilleries that operated along the River Spey required the railways for transport of goods. Many of them had their own tank engines also known as 'Pugs'. The railway was absorbed into the London & North Eastern Railway in 1923 offering a through passenger service to the south via Aberdeen from Boat of Garten. It became part of British Railways in 1948 and closed the line for passengers in 1965. Total closure happened in 1971. The section we are interested in is from Cragganmore to Dufftown which is just under 16 miles. From what we have observed on-line, it is a well used and popular path with plenty of history attached to it. A whiskey tasting crawl may be possible! This is definitely open to Horse riding and we'd advise that you use the car parking at the distillery at Cragganmore as a potential start point.
